14 herbs to shrink fibroids naturally

I started researching about fibroids when I was very young because my mother and a family friend had quite large growths, which caused a lot of bleeding. I was desperate to help them. Some of you might remember the videos I used to make on Youtube a few years back (linked below). What’s interesting is that I have now been diagnosed with fibroids myself. But I am very lucky that my fibroids are quite small (probably because I used to take preventative measures for a few years when I was younger. Wish I taken it more often).

There are three herbs in particular which I would recommend, mainly because I have experimented with them. They are kigelia africana, green tea and hempseed oil. I’ve also researched a further 11 more herbs that have scientific backing to shrink fibroids naturally — and I’m sharing all 14 here.

Before I get into the list, here is a quick reminder in case you don’t know what fibroids actually are. Uterine fibroids are benign growths that develop from the muscle layer of the uterus. They are not cancerous and are rarely life threatening. However, they can cause heavy bleeding, severely painful periods, and in many cases, fertility problems. They are incredibly common — studies estimate that between 30 to 77% of women will develop fibroids during their reproductive years, though only around a third will grow large enough to cause significant symptoms. When fibroids become severe, doctors typically recommend surgery. But before you get to that point, it’s absolutely worth exploring what nature has to offer. Here is a list of the 14 herbs I researched.

1. Kigelia Africana Powder

I discovered this herb when I moved to Ghana and it’s now part of my routine. Based on available research, Kigelia africana (commonly known as the sausage tree) is widely recognized in African traditional medicine for managing gynecological conditions, and it is often suggested that the powdered fruit may help support the reduction of uterine fibroids. Notably, one study published in the journal Phytomedicine, Molecular Toxicology reports that Kigelia africana powder and Kigelia africana oil preparations helped improve symptoms in some women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), indicating its broader relevance in gynecological and endocrine-related conditions.

Although PCOS affects the ovaries, while fibroids develop in the uterus, the hormonal imbalance that comes with PCOS is believed to contribute to fibroid growth. Fibroids thrive on high estrogen levels, and women with PCOS frequently experience estrogen dominance — where estrogen levels are disproportionately high compared to progesterone, according to PubMed. So kigelia Africana may help women whose fibroids is caused by PCOS or hormonal imbalance.

So, the existing evidence supports its traditional application for reproductive health. While there aren’t yet large scale clinical trials specifically testing this on fibroids in humans, multiple laboratory and animal studies have shown that it actively reduces inflammation, slows down abnormal cell growth, and helps balance hormones — three things that are directly linked to how fibroids develop and grow.

2. Hempseed Oil

Here’s what makes hempseed oil so relevant for fibroids. Fibroids thrive in an environment of high estrogen, chronic inflammation, and hormonal imbalance. Hempseed oil tackles all three. It is one of the richest plant-based sources of essential fatty acids, with omega-6 and omega-3 in an optimal 3:1 ratio — a balance that is considered ideal for human health and known to support hormonal regulation. (Source — Springer). That balance matters because a 2011 study found that adding omega-3s to the diet — exactly the kind found in hempseed oil — significantly reduced inflammation in the body. (Source — Healthline) Since inflammation is one of the key drivers of fibroid growth, this is significant. Hempseed oil is also rich in gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which has been shown to help women experiencing hormonal symptoms — with research showing that women who supplemented with GLA experienced a notable decrease in hormone-related symptoms.

The connection to fibroids specifically gets even more interesting. A large prospective study following over 80,000 premenopausal women found an inverse association between omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the blood and the likelihood of developing fibroids — meaning women with higher omega-3 levels were less likely to have them. Hempseed oil is specifically listed alongside flaxseed and macadamia nut oil as one of the best unprocessed plant-based sources of these protective omega-3 fatty acids for women managing fibroids.

I’m not saying hempseed oil is a cure. But combined with kigelia africana, it is absolutely part of what helped the women in my family manage their symptoms without surgery — and the research gives me every reason to keep recommending it.

Here is the video I made a few years back about hempseed oil and how it helped my relatives.

3. Green Tea

Green tea is another herb I have used for years. I used to drink it immediately after taking hempseed oil when I was younger. I see it as one of the most researched natural options for fibroid support. It contains a powerful compound called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which has anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative effects. According to a study published in the International Journal of Women’s Health, green tea extract significantly reduced fibroid size and improved symptoms in women over a 4-month period. The study is called “Treatment of Symptomatic Uterine Fibroids with Green Tea Extract: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Clinical Study”.

I also pay attention to how green tea supports hormone balance and reduces oxidative stress, which are both key in fibroid development. According to the study “Epigallocatechin Gallate Inhibits Proliferation and Induces Apoptosis in Human Uterine Leiomyoma Cells”, EGCG helps inhibit the growth of fibroid cells by affecting cell signaling pathways linked to tumour growth.

From my perspective, adding green tea consistently—either as a drink or extract—can be a simple but effective step when you’re trying to naturally manage fibroids, especially when combined with other supportive habits.

4. Turmeric

When I focus on turmeric, I see it as a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, mainly due to its active compound, curcumin. Curcumin has been studied for its ability to slow down abnormal cell growth and reduce inflammation—both key factors in fibroid development. According to the study “Curcumin Inhibits Proliferation and Induces Apoptosis in Human Uterine Leiomyoma Cells” published in the journal Phytotherapy Research, curcumin was shown to suppress the growth of fibroid cells and promote programmed cell death (apoptosis), which helps limit tumour expansion.

I also pay attention to how turmeric may help regulate signaling pathways linked to fibroid growth. According to another study “Curcumin Induces Apoptosis in Human Uterine Leiomyoma Cells via Mitochondrial Pathways” , curcumin demonstrated strong anti-proliferative effects on fibroid cells by targeting cellular pathways involved in survival and inflammation.

From my perspective, adding turmeric into your routine—whether through food, teas, or supplements—can be a strong natural strategy to support fibroid management, especially when combined with a broader approach that targets inflammation and hormonal balance.

5. Siegesbeckia and Leonurus

The Chinese have adopted the combination of Siegesbeckia and Leonurus for years to reduce scar tissue in the female reproductive system. Because they are excellent anti-inflammatory agents and immune systems enhancers, they promote optimum functioning of the body system’. Furthermore, since high hormone levels are associated with fibroid growth, the combined action of Siegesbeckia and Leonurus is capable of promoting shrinking. This is because they are both used in rectifying hormone disorders. You can obtain a blend of both natural herbs as a formula in a capsule

6. Vitex/Chasteberry

Also referred to as Vitex or Vitex agnus-castus, this herb is the largest genus in the Verbenaceae family. Chasteberry is so-called because it is from the chaste tree, which derives its name from its use to reduce the libido of men in ancient times. Chasteberry is a very effective remedy for treating patients suffering from unbalanced hormonal levels. Even more, a balanced hormone level promotes the shrinking of fibroid.

7. Maca Root

The White Peony is a herbaceous plant that produces white flowers, tuberous root, and smooth branched stems. White Peony possesses curative properties that’s why the Chinese consumed it for various ailments. Some of them are general abdominal pain and menstrual pain in women. Furthermore, white peony is useful for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome and polycystic ovary syndrome. It doesn’t surprise because White Peony is rich in antioxidants and therefore, can shrink ovarian cyst and fibroids. You can get them as tea bags with different trade-name.

8. Ashwagandha

By the mechanism of enzyme action, fibroids are susceptible to being dissolved. You are probably wondering, don’t humans have enzymes in their system? Well, the dose required to dissolve fibroids has to be pretty high. Thankfully, enzymes are protein by nature, so there’s no need to worry about any damage. For fibroid-digestion, Serrapeptase is very potent. Hey, you already have enzymes that function in food digestion, you don’t want to add more to the food digestion process. So it’s best to take serrapeptase before food and after complete food digestion (when going to bed). You can purchase it easily in stores or online.

9. Fraxinus Americana

Fraxinus Americana, commonly referred to as the ash tree, is found in North America, Asia, and other countries. It is widely known for its curative properties. All thanks to the active ingredients present in the Fraxinus Americana, including phenylethanoids, flavonoids, and coumarins. In many numerous lab and clinical studies, these active ingredients showed prospects in the cure of diseases. Research by Iqra Sarfraz and colleagues described Fraxinus Americana as a plant with numerous biological and pharmacological activities. It is potent for shrinking fibroids and other conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian disorder and adenomyosis.

10. Milk Thistle

Milk thistle extract, yellow dock, and dandelion root are liver function promoters.  Milk thistle seed has been reported as active in combination with other therapeutic agents to treat liver failure due to alcoholic or fatty liver disease. Here, the mechanism of shrinking the fibroid is the ability of these naturally occurring plants to promote the liver’s metabolizing action. Therefore, estrogen will rapidly leave the circulatory system. You can purchase all three natural herbs in combination as Milk Thistle Yellow Dock Dandelion capsules.

11. Shatavari

Shatavari, also known as Asparagus racemosus, is a herb used to treat health problems common with the female reproductive system. It is rich in antioxidants and hence, a potent eliminator of free radicals and combating oxidative stress. Furthermore, research reports that it also contains racemofuran making it suitable as an anti-inflammatory agent. It’s used to maintain the menstrual cycle and also balance hormone levels. Here, it works on the fibroid growth in a more holistic way. It regulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis,  a tightly regulated system involved in female reproduction. The idea is that an all-round healthy reproductive system will be devoid of fibroid growth.

12. Mushrooms

In case you are wondering how mushrooms found their way onto this list, no need to wander far. Mushrooms are very medicinal and have been used medicinally for hundreds of years in Asia. Concerning fibroids, maitake, shiitake, and reishi mushrooms possess anti-tumor activity. They are useful in the treatment of breast tumors and fibroid. They are supporters of the body’s immune system, one of the defenses against disease,  unwanted growth such as cancer, and other autoimmune diseases. Regular use of these natural herbs may even prevent further growth of the new fibroid. These mushrooms are available as a combined supplement in stores for affordable prices.

13. Castor Oil

Castor oil is an extract derived from the bean of the castor plant called Ricinus communis. Research shows that it has a powerful effect on the contraction of uterine walls’ contraction for the quick delivery of babies. They are potent for the treatment of constipation. It is widely known to stimulate the circulatory system in addition to the lymphatic systems of the body. To apply, soak a cloth in heated castor oil and place it on the lower belly. Cover with a plastic wrap and a small section of cloth and put a hot water bottle on it. The procedure will promote circulation to the uterus, which may shrink fibroid size significantly. It is ideal when fibroids are not very large.

14. Guizhi fuling

Also referred to as Gui Zhi Fu Ling Tang, it is an organic formula containing several other herbs with a wide range of capabilities. Some include shrinking uterine fibroids, restoration of hormone balance, elimination of toxins, and the promotion of the immune system. The combination of 5 potent herbs makes it an excellent choice to treat fibroid and ovarian cysts. Gui Zhi Fu Ling Tang shows combined efficacy with another well-known fibroid treatment drug called mifepristone. Together both drugs significantly reduced the growth of fibroid than mifepristone administered alone.
