5 Best Essential Oils for Natural Hair Growth

  • by

You’ve probably heard of (or read about) essential oils and carrier oils. It’s almost impossible to find a hair care regimen that doesn’t include these essential and carrier oils. According to hair experts, a combination of essential oils and carrier oils is necessary for healthy hair growth.

In this article, I will zero in on essential oils. What are essential oils, and how do they help your hair to grow? If you’d like to know more about essential oils, then keep reading.

What are essential oils?

Essential oil is a concentrated compound extracted from a plant. They are also called volatile oils, ethereal oils, or aetherolea. For the most part, these oils are named after the plants from which they are derived. So, an essential oil derived from lavender will be called “lavender essential oil”, while that derived from carrot will be called “carrot essential oil”.

The name “essential oil” is a bit tricky. I know that many people think they’re called essential because they’re important or indispensable. While it’s true that essential oils are important, that is not the origin of the name. Essential in this sense means that the oils contain the “essence” or it characterizes the fragrance or flavor of the plant from which it is derived.

Most times, essential oils are obtained through the process of steam distillation. However, it’s possible to use other mechanical methods like cold pressing and solvent extraction. It’s imperative to emphasize that essential oils are derived through mechanical, not chemical processes.

This is the main difference between essential oils and fragrances. For instance, lemon essential oil is obtained by a mechanical process, while the lemon fragrance is obtained by a chemical process.

What are essential oils used for?

Originally, essential oils were used primarily in aromatherapy. People inhale the aroma of certain essential oils to stimulate a part of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system affects your memory, behavior patterns, and emotions.

This is probably why essential oils are commonly used to relieve stress, anxiety, and depression. Apart from this, essential oils are also applied to the skin to nourish and treat certain conditions like eczema.

Using essential oils for hair is another ancient technique. For decades, women have been applying essential oils for longer, stronger, and healthier hair.

How to mix essential oils for hair growth

I mentioned early on that essential oils are concentrated compounds. What this means is that essential oil is too strong to be used on its own; it needs to be mixed with less concentrated oil. And that’s where the popular carrier oils come in.

These are also derived from plants, but they’re less concentrated and more neutral. Carrier oils have a few benefits of their own, but when they’re combined with essential oils, their main job is to literally “carry” the essential oils and prevent irritation to your scalp.
